She says, "If you start
with even 3 basic signs, more, eat, all done, those 3 signs can make a
world of difference."

The parents of one of her students, Poppy, started signing with her soon
after she was born. Now, at 20-months-old, Poppy knows between 300
and 400 signs. And before she knew any words, she used her signs to
alert her mom to a dangerous medical problem.

Heather Jaggers says, "She was telling me 'hurt'. I said 'where?' She showed
me her belly."

It turned out, Poppy had to go to the doctor. Heather says if she hadn't been
able to communicate what was wrong by signing, she might've needed an
operation.

But what do the experts say about baby sign language?

Christy MacDonald is a speech language pathologist. She uses sign language
with her young patients and her own children, and says there are several
reasons for parents to use it.

"It's the visual modality, it's tactical with hands, and auditory. So you're giving
the child 3 clues to what I'm talking about and giving them the means to
communicate if they can, when they can't speak yet."

Christy says in addition to the immediate benefits of communicating and
connecting with your baby, research shows that children who are taught sign
language actually score higher in cognition and language tests. She says she
understands the concern that parents may have about delaying speech, "But
studies have shown from the '90's that no, actually it enhances speech
development. As long as you pair the sign with the object with speech, then
you're going to help bring along that speech development."

Tamara Brody feels that teaching sign language is the best thing a parent can
do for their child's speech and language development.

"All the research points to every time you're using signs, it's actually laying a
foundation for speech."

Michelle Lashley has seen her daughter, Shelby, become more verbal since
she's been signing. She also sees some long-term benefits.

"It's something she'll have for the rest of her life that if she wants to continue,
it's an actual language that she can pursue and then communicate with other
people who don't have verbal skills."

There is a debate over whether parents should use American Sign Language
or the modified "baby signs."

Tamara Brody says ASL stimulates the brain in a different way and is more
respectful of deaf culture.

But Christy MacDonald says as long as you know what your child is saying and
can communicate with them, you have success.

If you decide signing is right for your child, MacDonald says make sure you're
consistent. If your baby has caretakers other than you, make sure they're also
signing. That way your baby doesn't get frustrated.

Secondly, follow your child's lead. Don't force them to learn signs if they don't
seem to be enjoying it.

And finally, make it fun. Look at it as a special way to bond with your baby
